SCIENTIFIC: Scolecite is a type of Zeolite (water containing silicate mineral). Scolecite occurs as prismatic, slender, striated crystals often grouped in radiating, fibrous masses found in basalts, gabbros, gneisses and with other hydrothermal zeolites and in contact metamorphic areas often associated with quartz, calcite and prehnite. Scolecite are also found in “twinned” formations that create a “v” termination. Scolecite is both pyroelectric and piezoelectric. Scolecite’s hardness is rated at 5 to 5.5 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. Scolecite color ranges from colorless to white, as well as, pale shades of pink, salmon, red, green and yellow. Scolecite was named from the Greek word, skolec, meaning “ worm” referring to its tendency to curl when heated in a blowpipe. Scolecite is transparent to opaque with a vitreous to pearly luster. Scolecite is found in India, Brazil, Scotland, Iceland, and in the USA – California, Colorado, New Jersey and Washington.
