SCIENTIFIC: Rhodonite is a maganese silicate often forming tabular crystals with rounded edges and/or as a compact grainy crystalline matrix that is coated with or contains veins or dendtritic inclusions of black manganese oxide. Rhodonite may also be found along with various manganese ores such as Rhodochrosite. Rhodonite is named for the Greek word rhodon meaning “rose” due to this mineral’s beautiful pink rose-red color. Rhodonite is also referred to as “Manganese Gravel.” Rhodonite’s hardness is rated at 6 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Rhodonite is translucent with a vitreous luster.
