SCIENTIFIC: Morganite is a gem quality beryl commonly found in geographic locations with lithium-rich pegmatites, lepidolite, and tourmaline deposits. Morganite’s crystal structure is hexagonal with dichroic (showing two different colors) properties and forms as squat, tabular crystals. Morganite is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster. Morganite’s color ranges from a variety of pinks, peachy-orange, as well as, some with a yellowish tint due to cesium or manganese. Morganite specimens may also have color banding. Morganite’s hardness is rated at 7.5 to 8 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. Morganite was first discovered in 1911 by G.F. Kunz and is named after the banker and gem enthusiast J. Pierpont Morgan. Morganite is found in Brazil, Mozambique, Europe, Madagascar, and in the USA – Pala, California.
