SCIENTIFIC: Iolite is a cyclosilicate and occurs in thermally metamorphosed rocks, schists and gnesisses, and occasionally in pegmatites and quartz veins. Iolite’s crystal structure form is Orthorhombic with short prisms. Iolite’s hardness is rated at 7 to 7.5 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. Iolite’s transparency ranges from transparent to translucent with a vitreous to “greasy” luster. Iolite is also known as Cordierite, named after the French geologist Pierre Cordier who first described the stone in 1813. The name Iolite comes from the Greek word “ion” meaning “violet.” Iolite may also be known as Dichroite. Iolite is pleochroic – meaning that this stone transmits different colors. Iolite may be blue, violet-blue, gray or blue-green. Iolite may also have inclusions of hematite and goethite which may cause a reddish colored sheen or aventurescence. Cordierite with gem-quality blue coloration may also be known as “water sapphire.” Iolite is found in India, Canada, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Brazil, Africa, Finland, Norway, and the USA.
