SCIENTIFIC: Hausmannite is a brown to black opaque metallic mineral containing manganese that forms into tetragonal crystals, prismatic crystals, grains and masses. Hausmannite’s hardness is rated at 5.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Hausmannite is named after JFL Hausmann, a professor of mineralogy from the University of Göttingen, Germany. Hausmannite is found in Germany, Sweden, Russia, Africa, and in the United States.
