borosilicate mineral that forms as prismatic or radiating crystals, as well as,
massive, columnar, and fibrous mineral deposits. Dumortierite’s crystal
structure is orthorhombic. Dumortierite occurs in pegmatites in aluminum-rich
metaphoric rocks and in geographic areas that are subjected to hot boron-bearing
vapors. When Dumortierite mineral forms as crystals in quartz matrix, it is
known as Dumortierite Quartz. Dumortierite is transparent to translucent with a
vitreous luster. Dumortierite’s color ranges from purple violet to royal blue,
as well as, green, pink and brown. Dumortierite’s
blue shades are created when iron is replaced by titanium. Dumortierite’s
hardness is rated at 7 to 8.5 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. Dumortierite is named after the French paleontologist
