SCIENTIFIC: Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate and member of the pyroxene family. Diopside occurs in Kimberlites and olivine basalts, metamorphosed siliceous limestones and dolomites. Diopside’s crystal structure form is prismatic and is occasionally found as tabular, fibrous masses. Diopside’s hardness is rated at 6 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diopside’s transparency ranges from transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster. The name Diopside comes from the Greek word meaning “two views.” Diopside may be colorless, white, violet-blue, as well as, bottle-green, brownish-green, or light green. Bright green Diopside is colored by chromium and is known as Chrome Diopside. Violet-blue Diopside is colored by Manganese and is known as Violane. Diopside is found in Italy, Africa, India, China, Sweden, Canada, Russia, Austria, Finland, Myanmar and in the USA.
