is a symbol from ancient Egypt used as an amulet or talisman.  It contains heiroglyphics which represent "that which encricles the Earth".  It was used for protection and said to have provided a link between those of the Earth and those of other planes.  Cartouche was one of the pieces of jewelry found in the tomb of Tutankhamen.
