striated crystals found in collective oxidized lead veins as a secondary
mineral. Crocoite is often associated with wulfenite, cerussite, and
vanadanite. Crocoite was the original source for the extraction of chromium and
initially used as a pigment due to its beautiful bright orange-red coloring. Crocoite
comes from the greek word meaning “saffron” after its color; Crocoite’s color
range includes pinkish, peachy orange, yellow, orange or red. Crocoite’s
hardness is rated at 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Crocoite
is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster. Crocoite is found in
Australia, Brazil, Germany, Russia, and in the USA – California, Pennsylvania,
and Arizona.
