Halite crystallizes out of evaporating brine lakes and also found in ancient bedrock where large extinct salt lakes and seas that have evaporated million of years ago. Halite's typical habits are perfectly formed cubes and sometimes on rare occasion a hopper crystal and the vein filling fibrous habit. This is a hopper crystal also known as skeleton crystal where edges extend outward from the center of the crystal leaving hollow stairstep faces between edges. Hopper crystal form due to the disparity of growth rates between the crystal edges and the crystal faces.
